They have graduated from medical school and have come to continue the last stage of their medical training in the Mississippi Delta.
Six incoming Mississippi Delta Family Medicine Residents began their three-year program beginning July 1, and some are expected to work in Clarksdale. The new residents joined the current sixteen residents who have completed first and second-year rotations.
“This is the third class to join our family medicine residency program and I am excited to welcome them to Greenville and the Mississippi Delta,” said Iris Stacker, Delta Health System Interim Chief Executive Officer. “The residency program continues to provide stellar primary care to our community as well as the region. Beginning in July, the Delta has twenty-three physicians offering services to families of all ages right here at home.”
The Mississippi Delta Family Medicine Residency Program New Residents 2022 are:

• Tamanna Karim, M.D., North East Medical College, Bangladesh
• Crystal Salako, M.D., American University of Integrative Sciences School of Medicine, Barbados
• Christian Smith, M.D., St. George’s University, Grenada
• George Stevens, D.O., William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine
• Gideon Yeboah, M.D., Caribbean Medical University, Curacao
National statistics show 60 percent of medical residents will choose to continue their practice in the area where they did their residency.
The Mississippi Medical Education and Research Consortium (MSMERC) is striving to create learner and patient centered environments that stress compassionate care, integrity, inclusivity, academic excellence, scholarship, adaptability and social responsibility.
The first year includes many facets such as Didactics and Presentations, Communications, Nursing Home, and Scholarly Activity and Research.
Didactics and Presentations: The Program will ensure that the residents are provided comprehensive and current education on medical topics and healthcare systems issues through required weekly four- hour didactic sessions.
Communications: The Program will provide resources for ongoing resident development in communication skills and interpersonal relationship building among peers, faculty, staff, and patients and their families.
Nursing Home: The Program will provide a geriatrics education experience through nursing home exposure.
Scholarly Activity and Research: The Program will provide support for residents to take advantage of the wealth of research possibilities within the Family Practice clinical setting, healthcare systems, and the Delta community and population served.
“Along with the residency program, the twenty-three physicians treat patients in the
Family Medicine Residency Clinic located at 300 S. Washington Avenue, Greenville,” said Stacker. “The residency program is one solution to the physician shortage that plaques our state.
“I hope the community understands how vital the Mississippi Delta Family Residency Program is to health care and the region,” added Stacker.
