BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Delta State University football team was voted to finish third in the preseason poll released by the Gulf South Conference this morning. The poll was voted on by the league's head coaches.
The back-to back Gulf South Conference champions earned 41 points along with two first-place votes as the top three teams in the conference were separated by five points.
Valdosta State topped the poll with five first place votes and 46 total points. West Florida was tabbed second as it received 42 total points and one first-place vote.
The rest of the poll saw West Alabama at fourth (30 points), followed by North Greenville (24 points), Mississippi College (21 points), while Chowan and Erskine were rounded out the poll tied for seventh (10 points). Points were awards on a 7-6-5-4-3-2-1 scale and schools were unable to vote for themselves.
Head Coach Todd Cooley and senior defensive back Marlon Windham will be traveling to the GSC Football Media Day will take place Thursday, July 25 in Birmingham, Ala. Coverage will be provided exclusively for free on FloFootball, beginning at 8 am CT.
The Statesmen return to Cleveland on Monday (Aug. 5) to start their fall camp; and opens the 2024 campaign as they travel to Mars Hill, N.C., Thursday (Aug. 29) to take on the Lions of Mars Hill University at 6:00 p.m. (CST) in Mears Stadium. The home opener will see the Statesmen host the Miners of Missouri S&T at Parker Field-McCool Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 6 p.m. Delta State will also celebrate the 38th Annual Pig Pickin' that weekend.
