The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics recently released their State Employment and Unemployment Summary for August of 2023.
Unemployment rates were lower in August in 2 states, higher in 10 states, and stable in 38 states and the District of Columbia, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Twenty-five states had jobless rate decreases from a year earlier, 9 states and the District had increases, and 16 states had little change.
Nonfarm payroll employment increased in 5 states, decreased in 3 states, and was essentially unchanged in 42 states.
Over the year, nonfarm payroll employment increased in 32 states and was essentially unchanged in 18 states and the District of Columbia.
The current unemployment rate for Mississippi (as of August 2023) stands at 3.2 percent.
For comparison, the unemployment rate for the previous reported month (July 2023) was reported as 3.0 percent.
Mississippi stands at a 0.7 percent decrease from the same point the previous year (August, 2022).
Mississippi's unemployment rate at the beginning of the previous year was 4.1 percent (in January, 2022).
The national unemployment rate currently stands at 3.8 percent, which has risen 0.3 percent from July 2023 (last month's report).
