We have a photo on Page One of today’s Clarksdale Press Register of the city crews picking up litter in downtown Clarksdale. It is coupled with a story on Page One that talks about young people helping to clean up our community.
And to that we say thank you Clarksdale Public Works and local youth! We hope your example will show other civic clubs, social organizations and even churches and neighborhoods that if they want a better community they are going to have to work at it.
And with that said, your Clarksdale Press Register urges the Mayor and Board of Commissioners to keep cleaning up Clarksdale.
We have a sweeper truck that needs to run downtown streets at night when cars are not parked there. We need to have jail trustees out in their green-striped pants every pretty morning that rolls around picking up trash and working off their fines. We need city crews to make, maintain and then dump trash cans in our downtown.
And last but not least we need to ask police officers to write tickets for littering if they see a violation. Well, maybe they just need to stop the litterbug and threaten them with a ticket if they don’t clean up their mess!
We also urge city leaders to stay on the demolition of abandoned houses in Clarksdale. Yes, Chuck Espy and his legal team tore down two houses and had to pay for them because they didn't have the paperwork done, but they had good intentions. We again want to point out city commissioners have spearheaded tearing down more than 10 abandoned houses this spring and summer, and this idea and effort should be maintained.
This newspaper would like to point out football season will soon bring family and friends to Clarksdale, and Clarksdale always has tourist in town. What if we could show them a clean and friendly city and get them to move here and invest in our community?
Last but not least, as the fiscal year winds down we have noticed the city has a little unencumbered cash to pay for this kind of work.
We hope our commissioners realize this is the year to clean up Clarksdale.
Let’s clean up Clarksdale. Let’s spend some money and tidy up our town.
