There was a shooting in downtown Clarksdale Friday night where three people were hit by bullets, but nobody is apparently being held responsible for the crime.
Your Clarksdale Press Register feels that is a bigger crime than three people being hurt by gunfire. Please don’t take that statement the wrong way: Those hit by bullets – and those put in fear of their life – have our deepest concern and wish for a speedy recovery.
But who is being held responsible for this crime?
Over half of a downsized Clarksdale Police Department was working Friday night when this event happened and they weren’t able to observe enough to make an arrest that would lead to charges?
What about the more than $250,000 in Skycop cameras that the city has purchased that are all over the area?
Where are the noble contacts and brave informers in this community who help police keep a lid on the bad guys?
Was there not enough lighting in the area?
Didn’t our Mayor and Commissioners know having a rapper DJ and very loud music until 2 a.m. after a rivalry football game might not be the best idea for a young crowd?
Where is the concern by the business community, tourism community, church community, Black community and White community over the shooting of young people in the very heart of your city?
Who is responsible for allowing this event and then allowing it to get out of hand?
It seems nobody is responsible for any of this.
Your Clarksdale Press Register prefers to bring you answers and the facts but this event leaves us all with few.
Your Clarksdale Press Register also tries to bring you ideas and solutions to community problems. But they are just ink on paper if elected officials and community leaders only shake their heads as they drink their coffee and read the headlines.
We are headed into the Holiday Season and hope a more loving nature takes hold of Clarksdale. Winter is coming and there won’t be many festivals until next spring.
We hope city leaders, we hope civic leaders and we hope readers of the Clarksdale Press Register will find answers and solutions and act to stop deadly crimes at Clarksdale events.
