If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. That adage fits with President Biden’s recurring efforts to cancel student loans.
Having had his plan for widespread forgiveness shot down by the Supreme Court, the Democrat is now trying to implement piecemeal ways to let student borrowers off the hook for some of their college loans.
Starting in February, the administration plans to lower monthly payments for millions of borrowers and greatly speed up how soon they can have their remaining balances forgiven. Other lenient repayment terms are scheduled for implementation in July.
This is, as Republicans claim, an effort by Biden to shore up his reelection prospects in November, assuming there will be more voters pleased with the forgiveness than those upset about the unfairness of it.
