Living in an area where the majority of the voters’ beliefs align with the Democratic Party can be tough when most of the people in Mississippi are Republicans.
Many politicians have a tendency to look after the voters who are responsible for them being elected.
Our Governor, Tate Reeves, and Lieutenant Governor, Delbert Hosemann, are Republicans. Mississippi’s two US Senators, Roger Wicker and Cindy Hyde-Smith, are also Republicans.
That puts Coahoma County and the Mississippi Delta at a disadvantage because most of the voters in those areas are Democrats.
The same scenario could be true for some counties and areas in California. California’s Governor, Gavin Newsom, and Lieutenant Governor, Eleni Kounalakis, are both Democrats. California’s US Senators, Alex Padilla and Adam Schiff, are both Democrats.
California’s strong Democratic base would put counties and other areas within the state that have mostly Republican voters at a disadvantage.
What can we do about the disadvantage we have in Coahoma County and the Mississippi Delta? How can we get our leaders to listen to our concerns when most of the voters are Democrats while most of our state leaders are Republicans?
Well, we do have one leader who is more likely to listen to our concerns and we have the power to hold accountable.
US Representative Bennie Thompson from Mississippi’s Second Congressional District was elected with the help of voters from Coahoma County and the Mississippi Delta.
Thompson, a Democrat, has been to several community meetings. He was at a town hall meeting at Madison Shannon Palmer High School in Marks in 2025 and he will be coming to Coahoma Community College on Friday.
There will be "Donuts with Congressman Bennie Thompson" in the Pinnacle at CCC at 9 a.m. Friday. Coahoma County residents and individuals from other communities are encouraged to attend.
It is always an opportunity to show up to these types of events and be part of the process. It is an even greater opportunity to be in the Pinnacle at 9 a.m. Friday since Thompson was elected with the help of Coahoma County residents.
If you are satisfied with Thompson’s performance, it is an opportunity to attend and say thank you to him for everything he has accomplished. That will remind him to stay on track because we are paying attention to everything he’s doing in Washington DC.
If you are unsatisfied with Thompson’s performance, it is an opportunity to show up and hold him accountable. Let Representative Thompson know what you are looking for from him. It will let him know that if he doesn’t make changes, the people who helped elect him may put someone else in office.
No matter where you are on the political spectrum, we have the power to hold Congressman Thompson accountable or appreciate all he has done for us. That is not something we can say for most of our leaders in Mississippi.
Let’s remember that and show up to "Donuts with Congressman Bennie Thompson" at 9 a.m. Friday in the Pinnacle at CCC. We hope to see you there.
