Loose Bruce & the Backwater Baptists took the stage Friday night with their hometown faithful making up the congregation.
Bruce Brewer is the band leader, Rich Wall is the lead guitar player, Jimbo Dunavent is a bass player and singer and Tommy Hubbard is a drummer and singer.
The band got together 25 to 30 years ago.
“Me and Jimbo started out playing together when we were like 13, 14,” Brewer said. “His brothers all played music. We just hung in there and kept at it.”
Brewer, a Webb native who currently resides in Clarksdale, said is mother, Lil Brewer, sang at Webb Baptist Church.
That sparked his interest in music.
“You had Elvis and the Beatles,” Brewer said. “Church was just where I got started singing.”
Brewer "preaches" at Hopson Commissary and private parties.
“It’s an easy way to make money,” Brewer joked.
Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, Leonard Skinner and Charlie Daniels play some of Brewer’s favorite songs. He enjoys outlaw country and music people can dance to.
“I like country,” Brewer said. “I like rock and roll, too.”
