A Celebration of the Life of will be held for Faye Freeman Skewes.
Faye Skewes at the age of 97 died July 16, 2022 at Flowers Manor Greenhouse in Clarksdale, Mississippi. She was born in Jasper, Ala., on Feb. 4, 1925 to Dora and Felix Freeman.
Preceding in her death were her husband John Curtis (Jack) Skewes and her two sisters, Elaine Adair and Sue Williams. Faye is survived by her three daughters, Sulaine Sims of Jasper, Ga., Meg Agostinelli (Tommy) of Lyon, and Liz “Lizan” Shaffer (Ron) of Lyon. She is also survived by her four grandchildren, Thomas Agostinelli (Jennifer) of Madison, Clare Agostinelli of Houston, Texas, Jason Spruill (Becky) of Atlanta, Ga., and Hunter Haring of Jacksonville, Fla.; three great grandchildren, Mary Morgan Agostinelli, Amelia Agostinelli, and Anna Spruill; as well as extended family of a niece and three nephews.
Faye was a talented professional watercolor artist and sculptor. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Education and a minor in Art from Auburn University. While attending Auburn, she was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority. Faye continued her education when she was 65 years old receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Delta State University. During her career as an artist, she taught elementary art, and later she taught adult watercolor classes. She was a member of the Pen Women’s Society of North Mississippi. Faye also entered her paintings in juried shows. She is well known in this area for her beautiful watercolor children’s portraits.
Faye and Jack Skewes were charter members of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. Faye taught an adult Sunday School class and assisted with the MYF program.
The family would like to give a special thanks to Faye’s personal caregivers, Ruth Ann Smith, Rachel Phillips, Carla Mathews, and Jacqueline Brown, and to all of the staff at Flowers Manor Greenhouse where she resided for the last five years.
Graveside services are 11 a.m. Saturday, July 23, 2022 at Oakridge Cemetery. Meredith-Nowell Funeral Home in Clarksdale, is handling the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Flowers Manor Retirement Community where she lived for 15 years or to any charity of your choice.
