I brushed leaves off my little white pickup Wednesday morning on the way to work.
And while the calendar says it is fall, there is still a lot of green on the trees. But they will soon turn gold at 504 West Second Street and there will be nice cool nip in the air.
I told someone recently that I don’t think you can appreciate fall to the fullest until you get a few years under your belt.
Spring is a young man’s game and girls seem to enjoy it more, too.
But the crispness of fall and the colors that signal a job well-done, fit those with a few years on them a little better. I like the smell of leaves burning, the first shiver as you step out of a nice warm house, the frost on the pumpkin and of course bundling up to go watch a football game.
Kids seem to ignore or complain about the first cold front that moves through town.
It causes me to pause, sniff the breeze and grin as I ponder a year winding down and a holiday season coming up.
Fall fun
Hope you plan to attend a football game this weekend.
It’s a big game for our Lee Academy Colts as they play Rossville in their first district match. Clarksdale opens their district slate at home with Lafayette. Coahoma is on the road, also in a district game, with North Panola.
I watched Clarksdale beat Gentry and almost beat South Panola this year. They have a quick running game and, as always, a tough, tough defense. Lee is struggling this year with a young team and a roster that forces most of their athletes to play both ways. Coahoma County won a classic double-overtime game against local foe Rosa Fort on homecoming night last week.
Let me urge you to grab a coat, your favorite girl and go out and watch a little football Friday night.
Fall projects
Yes, there are leaves that need to be raked and windows and doors that need to be tightened up at the Ingram Plantation as cool weather approaches and the days get shorter.
Archers headed to the woods earlier this month and I’ll grab my gun in a week or two to go looking for those deer on my old hunting spot back east. Then we turn our attention to Thanksgiving, Christmas and the New Year.
But let’s not get in too much of a hurry for the Holidays.
I do think it is time I ask Mrs. Ingram for a new fall coat, a flannel shirt and maybe a new pair of boots.
Half the fun of fall is making plans for cool weather and the change it brings.
Fall family
Fall also brings family together.
Sara and I have not figured out if we will host Thanksgiving or visit Momma’s table next month. In a family that once sported six mouths to feed, we now have three. That makes us much more welcome at the table of cooking kinfolk
Yes, the seasons change. Pardon me as I pause, grin and get ready once again.
