In America our royalty are movie stars and athletes, but a President on Inauguration Day runs a close third.
Did you see Melania Trump’s hat?
Did you hear about the parties and the guest lists?
I know people who were glued to the TV on Monday, watching the pomp of the ceremony that swore-in President Donald Trump – for the second time.
Never say never
Can you believe where Donald Trump was four years ago at this time?
The Capitol Riot, the threat of court action, a defeat at the hands of a Democrat candidate who let the machine run his election and most of his presidency.
Don’t get me wrong, I have some very big concerns about what Donald Trump might do.
But I do know two things.
He’s in charge. Those who don’t follow are cast aside, or as he is famous for saying, “Your fired!”
He lands on his feet. No matter how bad things are, he gets up, charts a course and plows ahead.
Greenland Grab?
Do you really think Donald Trump is going to annex Greenland and reclaim the Panama Canal? Actually he said he was considering buying Greenland. That’s how the filthy rich think.
I have to say this man is hard to predict and you never know what he is going to say next.
But after more than 30-years of watching politicians I have repeatedly seen them snooker biased media types with an absurd sound bite.
The concept is called deflection. They toss out a juicy tidbit and when the press goes on a feeding frenzy, they quietly get about the business of accomplishing something important and entirely different.
Yes, this man bears watching. Try not to grin.
Executive Order
On his first day of his second term, President Trump issued approximately 100 executive orders
Some of the bigger ones are:
• Close the U.S. border with Mexico.
• Opened the Gulf of Mexico to oil leases and ultimately drilling.
• Ended birthright citizenship for children born to women in the U.S. illegally.
• Withdrew the U.S. from the Paris Climate Agreement.
• Set goals for 50-percent of U.S. vehicles sales to be electric by 2030.
• Said the United States only recognizes two sexes – male and female – on all government documents
• Required a full-time return to in-office work for federal employees.
• Ordered a hiring freeze on government positions, specifically in the IRS.
• Signed an order pulling the U.S. and its funding from the World Health Organization.
• Formally established the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
I chose these because each one of them will have some kind of effect on Clarksdale.
Look around, many of our waiters have left. Our IRS offices may not be able to round out their workforce. There are changes coming that will affect healthcare in this community. He will “Make America Work Again.”
Trump said he was going to do all of these things – except pulling out of the WHO – while he was on the campaign trail.
The man does what he says he is going to do. Now let’s see if he can make it stick.
Left and Right
When I was sophomore at Moo U I took a political science class under Dr. Tip Allen.
I don’t remember a lot that he said in his syrupy Southern drawl, but I do remember this one:
“It’s like a pendulum. Govern-ment swings left and then the force that makes our country great pulls it back to the right. I will add time to the concept and as the pendulum swings it also marches at a right angle down a path called history. Nobody gets is completely right, but we do walk a course that defines our country and our lives.”
