It’s hard to believe we were suffering from an ice storm at this time last week.
Our power never blinked on West Second, but I talked to people in Friars Point who were still without power on Monday.
Your Clarksdale Press Register was open during the bout of bad weather and thankfully we only had a brief 30-minute power outage on Thursday. The paper was already out and we didn’t miss a beat.
Delivery on Thursday fell to yours truly and I drove bags of newspapers to Post Office in Rena Lara, Alligator, Duncan, Marks and then north to Tunica.
The roads were clear and we managed just fine.

How are Clarksdale Press Register readers liking the new Thursday delivery?
I started out in this business as a paperboy and found out quickly nothing hurts business more than a paper not arriving at the right spot on the right day and time.
We are getting more weekly news in the paper with the new deadline. We’ve had a few glitches, but most readers and advertisers seem to have adjusted quickly. As always, call me if you have a complaint.

Please take a look at the tax listing in this week’s paper.
As always there are names you know on this list.
It always surprises me to see the names of government officials on the delinquent tax roll for not paying their taxes.
I wish there was some way we could not pay our taxes and they wouldn’t get those big paychecks, or better yet just prompt them to slow down spending our money.

I grabbed Sara Sunday night and told her to come outside quick and look at the Chinese balloon in the sky!
She looked at me with those cautious brown eyes and then came to my side as I pointed to the East.
“That’s the full Moon, silly boy,” she said.
I told her I will use any excuse to get her in the moonlight.

Did you know Clarksdale does not have a truant officer?
And we wonder why kids don’t go to school.

Did you notice we had several independent candidates throw their hat in the ring last week seeking a county office?
Let’s face it, the Democratic Party is the only real political machine in the Mississippi Delta.
These Independents are not Republicans in disguise. They are folks wanting to let the Democrats fight it out in the primary and then capitalize on a candidate’s weaknesses.
I do think it is an indication that people are not satisfied with the local Democratic Party that has neglected them for too long.
Let’s watch and see if this changes anything.

I’ll be pulling for the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl.
I watched Chris Jones when he played high school football in Houston, Mississippi. I wrote stories about how he would one day play football on Sunday.
He was an incredible athlete then. He’s an incredible athlete now.

We turn our thoughts to basketball after Sunday.
Coahoma will go far in the playoffs. Lee Academy plays at home Thursday night.
This is a basketball town and I hope you will support the home team this week.
