The Coahoma County Emergency Management Agency has forwarded a winter weather advisory for Coahoma County that predicts potential ice accumulation tonight and a second round Tuesday.
“Coahoma County is under a Winter Weather Advisory from Monday, Jan. 30, and expiring Wednesday, Feb. 1, at noon.” said Charles Hale, Coahoma County EMA director. “There is a possibility of freezing rain with low (33%) potential of ice accumulation.”
The winter weather advisory was issued by the National Weather Service out of Memphis and similar forcasts cover most of Northwest Mississippi and Eastern Arkansas. An ice storm warning covers all county surrounding Memphis and includes Tunica County in Mississippi and Phillips County in Arkansas.
Hale said the timing for the event – as with all weather events – is not exact, but freezing rain is predicted across the Mid-South tonight and tomorrow night.
“The first round is predicted for Monday afternoon through Tuesday morning,” said Hale. “The second round, Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday morning.”
The National Weather Service listed the threat to Coahoma County as limited, the lowest category, with elevated, significant and extreme being worse.
“Coahoma County Emergency Management Agency will continue to monitor reports from the National Weather Service and provide updates as needed,” Hale said.
Motorists are urged to slow down and watch for freezing first on bridges and overpasses. City and county roads will probably remain clear as the ground will initially melt freezing rain.
Temperatures are expected to remain above freezing tonight and drop to freezing about 8 a.m. Tuesday.
Roads will probably be cold Tuesday and accumulations of ice could be higher starting mid-morning Tuesday and through the night.
Temperatures on Wednesday are projected to stay steady between 36- and 34-degrees with the chance of freezing rain at 70 percent.
The high Thursday is expected to be 41-degree with rain that should wash away any ice.
Friday is predicted to be mostly cloudy with sunshine sending a mid-afternoon high to 44.degrees.
As with all weather, the forecast can and probably will change and the community is encouraged to exercise caution and stay weather alert for the next few days.
