An inch of rain that fell steadily on Thursday, Dec. 27 and the threat of even more rain on Wednesday, Jan. 2 and Thursday, Jan. 3 has Clarksdale and Coahoma County residents living in flood-prone areas keeping a wary eye on the Big and Little Sunflower rivers.
As of 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 1, the river gage on the Big Sunflower River in downtown Clarksdale was reading at 16.47 feet, where it was expected to crest.
John Ruskey, owner of the Quapaw Canoe Company, said flooding shouldn’t be a problem unless it rains more than 3 inches in the next couple of days. He said rainfall of 6 inches “would be bad.”
Forecasts were calling for about an inch of rain beginning Wednesday afternoon and continuing into the early morning hours of Thursday before another bout of rain, bringing nearly three-quarters of an inch, begins Thursday night.
