When Carolyn Dixon and her husband, Johnny, were trying to come up with an ideal place to do some mule trading, they settled on Clarksdale.
The Delta town was at the midway point for both the Dixons, who make their home in Crossett, Ark., which is down near the Louisiana border, and for Keith Bullock, of Ripley, which is located near the Tennessee state line.
It was about 141 miles (or a two-and-half hour drive) for the Dixons, while it took Bullock a little over two hours to make the 114-mile drive from Ripley.
The Dixons said they reached out to the Clarksdale/Coahoma County Chamber of Commerce, which then directed them to the Clarksdale Mayor’s Office. They said both were very helpful and friendly and gave them the OK to use Nosef Park as a place to test ride the mule before purchase.
And the drive was well worth it, Carolyn Dixon said. Of the 4-year-old molly named Jesse, she said, “I am going to buy her. She’s mine.”
Bullock said Jesse is the “cream of the crop” as he has thee more mules at his farm.
The Dixons have horses and another mule and donkey that they enjoy riding on trail rides in the Ozark mountains.
“They’re really better than horses,” Carolyn said. “These old long ears are something else.”
