A contentious battle for a U.S. Senate seat has caught the interest of Coahoma County it appears.
As of Tuesday afternoon, a week before the Nov. 6 general election, 335 absentee ballots had been cast at the Coahoma County Circuit Clerk’s office in Clarksdale.
That number is higher than the number that had voted early at this time in 2014.
Circuit Clerk Demetria Jackson said it appears that the U.S. Senate race featuring Mike Espy, Cindy Hyde-Smith and Chris McDaniel has generated the most interest here, as well as the two contested judges races in Coahoma County and the choosing of a commissioner from five candidates for the Yazoo-Mississippi Delta Levee Board.
Those who will be out of town on Election Day or unable to vote at that time can still cast an absentee ballot from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday at the circuit clerk’s office at the Coahoma County Courthouse. The office will also be open from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday for those wishing to vote absentee.
Those mailing in their ballot will have to have their letter postmarked by 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5, to be considered for the general election.
Polls will be open in Coahoma County from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6. Those voting will need to bring a photo ID, said election officials.
There will be 18 voting precincts open in the county on Election Day as those having a question about where they will vote can contact the Coahoma County Circuit Clerk’s office at 662-624-3014 during normal business hours.
The county previously had 19 voting precincts, but there is no longer a Sherrard precinct as the 40 registered voters in that district were merged with the Farrell precinct for this election.
They’ll vote at the Farrell Utilities Building at 215 Farrell-Shaw St.
Jackson said the Sherrard precinct was merged due to a dwindling number of voters registered in that area and the fact that the precinct location had deteriorated to the point where it was going to need costly repairs.
