The Democratic numbers from Bobo Fire Station precinct came in at 7:39 p.m. but the Circuit Clerk had to send to Friar’s Point to have the voting machines brought to the courthouse Tuesday night.
And initial numbers showed runoff elections for Coahoma County Sheriff and Supervisor Dist. 5. But that changed with the counting of absentee ballots late Tuesday night
Jones was declared the un official winner Wednesday morning.
Carolyn Parham was re-elected as Chancery Clerk in a hotly contested race and Tax Assessor Ann Williams and Coahoma County’s other four supervisors were also re-elected or unopposed.
Circuit Clerk Demetria Jackson – who was unopposed – said her office still had to count a small number affadavit ballots, but most races were decided.
The county’s next to the last box came in at 8:30 p.m. and Jackson said most races were decided by that point.
The snafu with the Friar’s Point box was discovered at 9:22 p.m. when a phone call to the precinct chairman revealed the keys to the box could not be found. Jackson made the decision to go get the machines and count the electronic ballot at the Courthouse.
All precinct ballots were counted as of 10:15 p.m.
Incumbent Sheriff Charles Jones had 2,748 votes to or 54.74 percent of all 5,505 ballots cast in the Sheriff’s race but said he was not going to declare victory until the absentee ballots were counted. Mario Magsby was the next highest candidate with 38.98 percent or 2,111 votes. Stacy Lester was third with 544 votes or 10.01 percent.
“Until we get all the numbers and votes, I don’t want to make a statement,” said Jones. “I got my people out and ran hard. There was some confusion and I just want to see the final numbers.”
Incumbent Dist. 1 Supervisors Paul Pearson was elected to his seventh term as supervisor defeating challenger Stanley Lynom 846 to 353. Pearson garnered 70.56 percent of the vote and had the strongest showing among supervisors with opponents.
“I am very blessed to have people stick by me all these years,” said Pearson. “This is not an easy job but I love it and a lot of people helped me once again.
