Coahoma County High School scored a combined 16 points during the first four games of the football and opened 1-3.
The Red Panthers (1-4) lost for the third consecutive week 48-20 at Holly Springs Friday night, but they scored more points than all of the other games combined.
Senior Tarkevius Logan returned a kickoff 62 yards for a touchdown, while junior quarterback Lamont Lee ran in touchdowns from 3 and 10 yards out.
“It was close at halftime and they started pulling away in the second half,” Lee said.
Logan was pleased with CCHS’s progress.
“We’ve just got to do everything mentally,” Logan said. “We’re a physical team. We just need to have it in our head that we can do it.”
Senior receiver Markevious Holmes was out with an injury. Logan and Holmes have been the two main receivers.
Others stepped up to help Logan during Holmes’ absence.
Senior Xavier Cannon caught a deep pass on one of Lee’s first throws of the game.
“It was great,” said Cannon about stepping up on offense.
Sophomore linebacker Christian Banks forced one fumble and recovered another.
“It was a good experience getting a forced fumble,” he said.
Banks said he scooped up the ball when the running back was unable to get to the ball.
Banks’ twin, sophomore Chrishuun Banks, and Cannon were also involved in forcing and recovering fumbles for CCHS.
The Red Panthers have a bye this week and open district play at Madison Palmer High School at 7 p.m. Oct. 4.
Players feel good about the direction the team is taking going into the bye week.
“We’re putting a lot of points on the board because our offense is going crazy,” Lee said.
Logan agreed.
“If we could do everything as a team, we’ll win every game we play from now on out,” he said.
Christian Banks said the defense has to improve.
“If everybody just puts hard work in on defense, we’ll be straight,” he said. “Everybody needs to learn how to tackle. That’s the key thing of the team, defense first.”
Logan and Lee talked about the importance of communicating well on defense.
