Clarksdale High School accumulated 384 rushing yards in its home opener Friday night en route to a 49-30 victory against Greenville.
It was the Wildcats (2-0) 11th consecutive victory against the Hornets (1-1).
Senior quarterback Queston Skipper, who is normally a running back and filling in for an injured Tamara Allen, finished with 18 carries for 205 yards and four touchdowns. He was the Clarion-Ledger Player of the Week for his performance in Week 1 as Clarksdale won 32-7 at Coahoma Early College High School.
"It means a lot because it's just the first time,” said Skipper of winning the award. “That was last week, but it's a whole new week. We've just got to keep going. 2-0 feels good. We've just got to keep going until we get to the goal."
Wildcats coach Henry Johnson was proud of Skipper’s award.
"That's big for us and our program and the Clarksdale school system and our community,” Johnson said. “It puts us back on the map, so we're always proud when that happens with one of our kids."
Junior Sammie Ray finished with 16 carries for 123 yards and two touchdowns, while junior D.K. Bays had 10 carries for 60 yards and one touchdown.
Bays also had 13 yards receiving and completed a 19-yard pass to Skipper on a trick play.
Junior Jamarius Dorsey led the Wildcats with four pass deflections. Sophomore Justin Davis led with 15 tackles followed by junior De’meric Strong with 12.
Clarksdale jumped out to a 14-0 lead and never lost its advantage.
Skipper opened with a 10-yard touchdown run with 10:36 remaining in the first quarter.
Ray set up the score with a 58-yard run one play earlier.
Skipper followed with a 3-yard touchdown run with 6:25 to play in the quarter to extend the lead to 14-0.
"We jumped out on them quick and we were able to get a couple touchdowns early and we kind of got the momentum going a little bit,” Johnson said. “They kind of worked their way back in the game."
Johnson said the plan is to ease Skipper into the passing game, but the offense will work around his strength, which is running the ball. The Wildcats had 32 passing yards as a team.
Johnson’s main concern is winning and felt it was a team effort Friday night.
"A lot of people don't see our offensive line, but our offensive line is tough, so we've got to give a lot of credit to those guys and those wideouts, too,” he said.
Clarksdale is back in action at 7 p.m. Friday when it takes on Coahoma County High School (1-1) at Crumpton Field. The Red Panthers are coming off of an 8-6 win at West Tallahatchie.
