All ages welcome, no cost to participate
Residents of Coahoma County and surrounding communities will have an opportunity to learn about the game of tennis on recently renovated courts at Nosef Park Saturday morning.
A community tennis event will take place from 10 a.m. to noon, all ages are welcome, there is no cost and tennis rackets and balls will be provided.
Rivers Humber organized the event, while the United States Tennis Association and Clarksdale Parks Commission are sponsoring it. The Parks Commission recently received a grant from the Mississippi Tennis Association to help pay for new benches, nets and windscreens at Nosef Park.
Humber said there would be different workshops on Saturday.
“I think there’s a new interest in health,” she said. “We were recently listed in Coahoma County as the most obese county in Mississippi. I just think tennis is a great activity for kids, adults. People of all ages can play tennis all their life, unlike some other sports.”
Humber played tennis and worked for the USTA. She is a 1988 Lee Academy graduate and made it to the state finals in doubles her senior year.
The USTA has also had some successful local tennis teams.
“We’ve had teams from Clarksdale to go to the state championship and the sectionals,” Humber said. “If you win the state championship, you get to go to the sectionals.”
Saturday’s event will be for anyone, regardless of skills.
“It’s really just to come out and get more information about tennis,” Humber said.
Lines were recently painted on the tennis court to make up a kids court.
“It’s easier for younger kids on the smaller court,” Humber said.
