The Coahoma County High School boys and girls both won district championships at North Side High School and the opening round of the Class 2A playoffs this week.
The Lady Red Panthers (26-3, 10-0) will be hosting East Webster in the second round of the playoffs Friday, while the Red Panthers (20-10, 9-1) will be hosting St. Joe Saturday. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. in both games.
The Lady Red Panthers defeated Mantachie 61-42 in the playoffs Monday.
Calysia Phillips and Nakia Cheatham led the way with 18 points each, Shakira Artis had 17, Nyriah Artis had 4, and Brianna Ratliff and Tyana McClenton had 2 each.
“The starting five did what they were supposed to do and 0 (Ratliff) came in and did what she was supposed to do,” said coach Derrick Moore following the win.
The Red Panthers defeated East Union Tuesday, but Moore was not happy with the performance.
“We shot the ball well, but we shot, we gave up two,” Moore said. “We shot, we gave up another one. We shot, we gave up an and one. That’s not good basketball. We’re going to have to. If we don’t, it will be our last game.”
The Lady Red Panthers won the district tournament championship against Leland 46-35.
Cheatham led the way with 22 points followed by Phillips with 12.
The Lady Red Panthers opened the tournament with a 42-20 win against Charleston.
Phillips scored 13 points, Cheatham had 12, and Shakira Artis had 10.

Tarkevius Logan led the way with 18 points followed by Bentavious Galmore with 12.
The Red Panthers opened the tournament with a 56-53 win against O’Bannon.
Markevious Holmes had 16 points, Trumaine Jones added 14, and Galmore contributed 10 in the win.
