The Clarksdale Police Department is investigating an aggravated assault and separate cases of auto theft and auto burglary and has reported these incidents and a report of shots fired to your Clarksdale Press Register Friday morning.
Police were contacted on Thursday by a man, who they did not identify, that while driving his car in the 600 block of Catalpa Street, a group of people, who were also not described or identified, fired shots at the victims car.
Police said the victim was not hit by any of the bullets but the car did receive damage from the gunfire. Aggravated assault is defined as a crime where a deadly weapon is used or a situation that prompts someone to fear for their life.
Also Thursday, police responded to a call of auto theft in the 1400 block of Desoto Street.
The complainant told police an unknown person drove a Dodge Ram pickup out of a fenced in portion of his businesses during the night. The pickup was later recovered at an apartment complex in Rosedale by the Bolivar County Sheriff’s Department.
No suspect was apprehended, the owner was notified of his truck’s location and the incident is an active investigation by both agencies.
An auto burglary has once again resulted in the theft of a gun from a car in Clarksdale.
Police were called to the 300 block of Yazoo Street after someone allegedly broke into a 2018 Ford Fusion and stole a .22-cal. handgun. The victim said nothing else was taken.
Residents are once again reminded not to leave weapons in their vehicles and to always lock their car or truck.
The Clarksdale Police Department is also making a concerted effort to stop gunfire in the city and is asking the community to call them any time they hear shots fired in their neighborhood.
A shots fired call was reported in the 200 block of Lynn Street, Thursday and patrolmen checked the area and nothing was found.
Clarksdale Police Chief Sandra Williams said police will respond to the scene of a shots fired call, look for shell casings and gladly talk anonymously to the caller or anyone in the neighborhood about the incident. Williams said evidence and information, no matter how small, is needed to make arrests and stop gun violence.
