According to a recent study, Coahoma County receives some of the biggest tax refund checks in Mississippi.
Smart Asset, a financial technology company, ranked Coahoma County the fifth highest county in the state with the average tax refund amount being $3,642.
Coahoma ranked Claiborne, Humphreys, Tunica and Leflore in that order. Claiborne had the highest refund of $3,835.
The study also showed Coahoma County with 7,400 taxpayers getting a refund, second only to Leflore County, with 9,680 taxpayers getting a refund. The SmartAsset study also showed approximately 1,300 taxpayers in Coahoma County that owed approximately $4,394 each in taxes.
Taxpayers are deemed working adults over 18 and under 65 who have been gainfully employed for more than six months.
Census data estimates 22,628 people live in Coahoma County. That number is down from 30,622 reported in 2000 and 26,151 reported in 2010.
