The plan is Coahoma Early College High School students to attend school in person twice a week and have online learning every Monday for the 2020-21 school year.
CECHS principal Cloretha Jamison outlined the hybrid model she will use in response to the coronavirus pandemic during the Coahoma Community College and CECHS board meeting Monday morning.
Jamison opened her presentation by expressing her condolences for 2017 CECHS graduate Trakedreya Jones from Friars Point, who died from the coronavirus. She then went into her plans.
“First and foremost, we’ve taken a proactive approach and making sure that we have everything needed to open up school, according to CDC regulation and guidance and information provided by MDE (Mississippi Department of Education),” Jamison said.
She said the MDE did require schools to be open five-and-a-half hours a day, but that has been reduced to four hours to help schools with flexibility to provide a safe environment for faculty, staff and students.
“We plan to implement a hybrid schedule,” Jamison said. “That means we’re going to have face-to-face contact as well as virtual learning five days a week.”
Jamison said freshmen and sophomore will report Tuesday and Thursdays, while juniors and seniors will report Wednesdays and Fridays with online learning Mondays.
“Each day of the week, all teachers will report to the campus for teaching,” Jamison said.
Jamison said backup system for all virtual learning will be place, if necessary. She added lessons will be on Zoom for students to review and she will continue to contact parents through mail, email and text messages.
She said students enter through the east entrance way in building two next to the tennis courts. When they enter, they screened again after getting off bus or leaving their car. Backpacks will be checked, students will pick up hand sanitizer, get their grab-and-go breakfast and head to the classroom.
Jamison said different areas of the school will be cleaned frequently.
There will be disposable masks and hand sanitizer in classroom for everyone and teachers will use disinfectant.
“Only the teacher will be able to move about the classroom and to avoid contact, our teachers will move from room to room,” Jamison said. “Our students will not be moved.”
Jamison said a group of students will take all classes together to avoid contact. There will be 12 students and one teacher in room to avoid contact. Face shields will be supplied for students and teachers.
