Robert Jackson (D) is the projected winner of District 11 in the State Senate in the general election Tuesday night Clara Davis-Dawkins (I) with a 29.52 percent voter turnout in Coahoma County.
Jackson, who has been a State Senator for 16 years, won the Democratic Primary against Kim Seals before facing Davis-Dawkins in the general election. Jackson received 2,757 votes (83.85 percent) in Coahoma County, while Davis-Dawkins received 525 voted (15.97 percent). There were six (0.18 percent) write-in votes. Absentee ballots were expected to be counted at the Coahoma County Courthouse this morning, but they would not change the final result.
“I am astounded by the support I received in Coahoma County,” Jackson said. “I have enjoyed an overwhelming support from Coahoma County since I ran the first time and I’m just so appreciative of the people here and I will do my darndest to earn their support.
“I thank the people of Coahoma County and all of the 11th District for their support. I will do my darndest to try to do the best I can.”
Jackson earned 1,760 votes in Quitman County, where he resides, to Davis-Dawkins’ 915 votes. Results in Tunica County and Panola County were not available as of press-time today.
A total of 4,662 of the 15,791 (29.52 percent) registered voters in Coahoma County cast their ballot. The next election is the Presidential Primary in 2020. The number decreased from the 2019 primary where 5,629 of the county’s then-15,679 registered voters went to the poll and cast a ballot.
“Very low turnout today,” said Circuit Clerk Demetria Jackson. “People did not come out. We would encourage people to get registered to vote who are not registered and, if they are registered, to come out and vote in the March 2020 Presidential Primary Election.”
