With the COVID-19 pandemic interrupting the daily lives of many individuals, retired longtime Clarksdale Municipal School District coach and athletic director Curtis Kemp Sr. decided to give something back to the children in the community.
Kemp Sr., owner of K's Spin & Dry Laundromat on Martin Luther King Boulevard, got together with friends and put together lunch bags consisting of hot dogs, oranges, chips and soda Saturday. The bags went to the first 200 children in the neighborhood who showed up.
The event was scheduled to begin at noon Saturday, but Kemp Sr. estimated he gave away 20 bags prior to the scheduled starting time.
“Everything is going pretty good,” Kemp Sr. said. “We had some waiting a little bit early, so we went on and gave them theirs.”
The Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity with Duke Jackson, Patrick Johnson, Ryne Gipson and Sandy Tillis volunteered to help with the giveaway. James Outlaw, M.C. Stuckey, Birley Gipson, Barbara Tribble and Roy Farmer were also volunteers.
