Dear Editor,
This is community activist Milton Gardner in Clarksdale. I want to share with the community and citizens of Clarksdale what we can do if one puts forth an effort.
Last year I went before the Clarksdale Public Utility board of commissioners and requested (Safety Lights) to be installed under all four, (Viaducts) in Clarksdale’s city limits. After being told by the general manager of Clarksdale Public Utilities that I needed to address the mayor and city board of commissioners and have the (police chief) make a recommendation based on safety issues I presented to the mayor, commissioners and police chief the safety issues.
I asked Police Chief Sandra Williams, working along with the city attorney, to have safety lights installed under all four viaducts. A couple of months later I made a request to Mayor Chuck Espy and the board of commissioners my concern and that of the citizens to have (Safety Lights) placed under the (viaduct) on highway 61/State Street.
As everyone one can see for themselves we, Clarksdale have safety lights installed under all five, viaducts in Clarksdale city limits.
Clarksdale is truly growing and making great advances in the quality of life for all citizens of Clarksdale.
Grass is being cut on city right of way at my recommendation to Mayor Chuck Espy. In the past and under the previous leadership this was not happening.
I as a community activist I recommended the city/mayor have four-ways stop signs erected, handicap ramps, storm drains replaced, run-down houses removed, overgrown grass on the (railroad track) cut and the list goes on.
I personally want to thank Mayor Chuck Espy, all four city commissioners, the police chief, the city attorney and Clarksdale Public Utilities for working hand-in-hand with the mayor and others. I want to thank everyone that supported my vision for Clarksdale, Mississippi.
Respectfully,
Milton Gardner,
Clarksdale, Miss.
