JIMMY WALKER: Please cut our budget wisely

By FLOYD INGRAM / THE PRESS REGISTER,

Dear Editor,

Well we finally found out what the casino was paying the county or at least part of it. I was always told it was an insignificant amount and it didn’t affect the budget.

Truth is according to the Clarksdale Press Register, $102,000 per month has actually been used more or less for the general fund. Now other agencies will receive cuts.

Agencies like North Delta Planning and the Industrial Authority actually produce revenue in terms of construction and jobs.

We actually have a tax district for the Industrial Authority and it is misleading to collect a specific tax for industrial development and spend it in the general fund. Other agencies receiving assistance are mental health, speech and hearing, which are some of  your larger employers.

If you must make cuts, consider county employment, supervisor salaries, and transportation. Work with the city to consolidate fire, law enforcement, schools, roads and streets. There is real money there.

Thank you,

Jimmy Walker, Sr.,

Clarksdale, Miss.
