CLARKSDALE, Miss. — George Crump Miller passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on May 16, 2025, following a brief battle with cancer. A private family graveside service will be held on Monday, May 19, 2025, followed by a visitation from 11a.m. to 1 p.m. in the St. George’s Episcopal Church Parish Hall.

Miller was born in Clarksdale on September 11, 1948, to the late Anne Crump Miller and former County Attorney, Tax Collector and Sheriff, Leighton S. Miller, Sr.
Miller was educated in the Clarksdale Public School System and graduated from Clarksdale High School in 1966. He graduated with a B.B.A. degree in Accounting from Delta State College, where he played on the tennis team, was a member of the Delta State Senate, served on the Student Faculty Athletic Committee, and was a member and Treasurer of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. He was a life member of the Delta State Alumni Association and a Statesman Club member.
Upon graduation, Miller went to work for Holiday Inns Inc. where he was a Field Auditor. He later became an Auditor for the State of Mississippi Department of Audit. In 1983 he became a Letter Carrier with the United States Postal Service, retiring in 2009 after 26 years of service.
A lifelong communicant of St. George’s Episcopal Church, Miller had served as Church Treasurer, Vestry member, Junior Warden, Lay Reader and Lay Eucharistic minister.
He was a member of the Clarksdale Lions Club, serving as 3rd Vice-President, Treasurer and Tail Twister. He was a long-time Commissioner of Clarksdale Dixie Baseball. He was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason with the Clarksdale Masonic Lodge, where he served as Grand Master in 2007. He also was a former Treasurer of the Clarksdale Shrine Club.
Miller served 12 years as a board member on the Coahoma County Economic Development Authority. In 2012 he was appointed a Commissioner of the Clarksdale Public Utility Commission. He also served as Chairman of the Mississippi Delta Energy Agency (MDEA).
In 2016 he was inducted into the Clarksdale/Coahoma County Sports Hall of Fame. He was also a former assistant coach of the Lee Academy Tennis Team and sponsored the Lee Academy Tennis Club.
He leaves his wife of 50 years, Debbie Huston Miller; a son George C. Miller and his wife, Rachel; three grandchildren, Carter, Mallory and Preston all of Southaven Miss.; a sister, Anne Miller Humber of Clarksdale; a brother, Leighton S. Miller, Jr. of Hattiesburg; and several special nieces, and nephews and cousins.
Memorials may be given to St. George’s Episcopal Church, the Clarksdale Care Station, or a Charity of the donor’s choice.
