Lee Academy senior pitcher and shortstop Graydon Gullick is officially playing baseball for Mississippi Delta Community College next season.
Gullick had verbally committed to playing for MDCC in early February and attempted to officially sign on a day when the power went out at Lee due to the weather conditions.
Gullick, in front of his coaches, teammates, family and friends, officially signed with MDCC in the Lee Academy library Wednesday, Mar. 3.
“We’re real excited for Graydon,” said Colts baseball coach Brock McKnight. “We’re real excited for what he’s done for our baseball program. Since I met him as a sophomore, I knew he was going to be able to play at some level. This is just the first step for our team. We have other guys in the future that are going to be able to look forward to an event like this.
“I’m excited for him and his family to be able to fulfill his dream of playing college baseball. We’re excited to see him in the future.”
Pictures were put together of Gullick through the years on a No. 6. Gullick wears No. 6 and the pictures were shown at the ceremony. There was also a cake recognizing Gullick saying “Congratulations Graydon” and photos of him were on display.
Gullick’s father, Jason, passed down a ring to him that has been in the family for generations at the ceremony.
The Colts are 3-4 on the season and Gullick has been on the mound in two of the wins.
Gullick pitched one inning, struck out two and gave up no runs in a 4-1 win against Choctaw County. He pitched all five innings, struck out eight, walked none and gave up two hits in a 10-0 win against Indianola Academy. He picked up the win on the mound.
Gullick, Ryan Mooney and Russell Cook are the three main Colts pitchers.
“Me and Ryan pretty much have the pitching down from here,” Gullick said. “Russell helped out, too.”
When students were out of school thanks to the snow, Gullick was able to practice at Lee Academy.
“We had the indoor cage that we could go in,” Gullick said. “It’s always open.”
At the end of the ceremony, Gullick concluded, “I just feel pretty good.”
