Rep. Bennie G. Thompson announced this week the application period for FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Grants has opened.
In early August, FEMA published the Notices of Funding Opportunity for the Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities (BRIC) and Flood Mitigation Assistance hazard mitigation grants.
For fiscal year 2021, there is $1 billion is available for the BRIC grants and $160 million is available for Flood Mitigation Assistance grants. These funds can be used to combat the effects of climate change and build stronger communities.
Interested applicants should apply by Dec. 1, 2021 to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency.
“Due to climate change, natural disasters are becoming more frequent and are wreaking havoc on our communities. Investing in mitigation projects is one of the key tools for communities,” said Congressman Thompson. “I applaud the Biden Administration for increasing funds for FEMA’s hazard mitigation.
"This funding will help our communities in Mississippi protect themselves from the impacts of disasters such as flooding, hurricanes, and tornadoes," said Thompson. "I urge every community within Mississippi to take advantage of this funding.”
Congressman Thompson, 73, has been serving as the U.S. Representative for Mississippi's Second Congressional District since 1993.
A member of the Democratic Party, he has been the Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security since 2019, previously holding the position from 2007 to 2011.
Thompson most recently visited Clarksdale this spring with the grand opening of Delta Health Systems - Clarksdale Hospital where he spoke on funding for rural healthcare and Medicare/Medicaid expansion. He also visited Coahoma Community College and spoke to students in May 2019.
