Two Lady Tigers reflected on their signings to Grambling State University recently.
Coahoma's 2021 season top scorer Jurnee McLaurin decided to accept Grambling's offer in front of Mississippi College. The former Tiger mainly chose Grambling because her future coaches' personalities reminded her of coach Stephanie Murphy and assistant coach Isaiah Butler. Coach Murphy's reaction was indeed that of a proud mom.
"I feel like a highly proud parent. I am so happy for her. To know she chose Grambling because the coaches reminded her of myself and coach Butler is such a blessing that she perceives us that way and shows that we did something right," said Murphy
Grambling head coach Freddie Murray selected McLaurin for her versatility. "She is an extremely versatile guard and can score the basketball in a variety of ways," stated Murray. "Her ability to get to the rim and shoot the three will allow her to be very successful in our system," Murray added.
Grambling selected McLaurin due to her outstanding 2021 season performances listed below:
• Averaged 19 points and 4.2 rebounds in her sophomore season at Coahoma Community College
• Scored in double figures 29 out of 35 games.
• Was a part of the 2020-2021 MACCC North Division, Co-Conference Championship team.
• MACCC North Player of the Year.
McLaurin loved the graphic that portrayed her signing, and it made her feel welcomed to Louisiana-based institution. "I am so excited to play D1 basketball with the other ladies that were signed to the program. The graphic was shocking because it made me feel like they are truly excited for me to come and play," said McLaurin.
McLaurin will be accompanied by her teammate Mary Wilkins who also decided to keep her Tiger status by becoming a Grambling Lady Tiger. Wilkins also received offers from Dillard University and Lane College but chose Grambling due to its versatile benefits.
"I believe Grambling was the best out of all the choices regarding making me better and the overall experiences I can receive alongside the exposure," said Wilkins. Murphy was ecstatic with Wilkin's decision.
"Just to see how Mary has evolved from the first year is such a blessing like socially, athletically, academically and then to see her be rewarded to be able to play and further her education is a blessing for her and the program," said Murphy.
She continued by saying Grambling is getting an excellent player who still has unleashed potential.
"I think Grambling is getting a great guard. I think she is just scratching the surface on how good she can be, and I hope Grambling coaches can pull out that greatness from her that is still hidden," said Murphy.
Grambling's coach selected Wilkins due to her strength and determined mindset.
"She is a strong and skilled wing that can shoot the three and knows how to score. A proven defender with a winner's mentality that works hard & competes in everything that she does," said Murray.
Grambling highlighted her 2021 performances that made her a standout for their program with the list below:
• Averaged 10 points, five rebounds a game during her tenure at Coahoma CC
• Tabbed for North First Team All-MACCC.
• Wilkins was a part of the 2020-2021 MACCC North Division, Co-Conference Championship team
