Lee Academy is peaking at the right time of the baseball season.
The Colts (10-10, 4-5) are now on a three-game winning streak as they won the first of a best-of-three playoff series last week.
No. 3 Lee won 15-2 in five innings at home against Carroll Academy. The two teams will play at Carroll Academy at 4 p.m. Thursday. The Colts would win the series with a victory. If Carroll Academy wins, a decisive Game 3 will follow Game 2 at Carroll on Thursday.
“We’re playing really well right now,” said Lee coach Brock McKnight. “It’s a lot of fun to see. It’s a lot of fun to be around.”
Lee scored on a double by Sam Stonestreet, a single by William Walker, a double by Ethan Dalton, and a single by Graydon Gullick in a seven-run first inning. Jackson Spinks, Stonestreet, Dalton, Russell Cook, Andrew Williamson, and Spinks all drove in runs in a seven-run second inning
The Colts finished with 14 hits.
Walker, Dalton, Cook, Gullick, and Stonestreet each managed two hits to lead Lee.
“Our bats are coming around,” McKnight said. “We’re swinging it well right now off of some good arms. That’s always fun. The guys are buying into what we’re doing and they’re buying in at the right time. It’s good to see.”
The Colts scored seven runs in the first inning, another seven in the second and one in the third to jump out to a 15-1 lead.
“It’s always important,” said McKnight of the quick start. “No matter who you play, no matter what round it is, no matter what you’re doing, it’s always fun. You’ve got to get ahead early. It helps you out. It gives you a good chance to win.”
Gullick threw the first three innings on the mound for the win allowing one run on one hit, striking out six and walking one. The Colts went to the bullpen after getting a big lead.
“We were able to take him out,” McKnight said. “If we need him on Thursday, he’s there. All of our guys are. It helps us out. Our whole bullpen’s ready to go. We’ve just got to do what we do.”
William Walker gave up two hits while recording one strikeout in one inning of work.
Ryan Ferracci gave up two hits and one run in one inning.
“Great game,” McKnight said. “I’m proud of them. I’m ready for the next one.”
Ryan Mooney will start for Game 2 on Thursday.
“He’s going to have to throw a lot of strikes and get after it,” McKnight said. “We’ve seen them. We know what they’re about. They know what we’re about, but if we’re continue to do what we do, we’ll be just fine.”
