The girls were pretty on homecoming night, but the score wasn’t as Lee Academy lost a heartbreaker to Carroll Academy, 10-7.
The Colts just never seemed to hit their groove and didn’t score until late in the game. Turnovers and a number of penalties also didn’t help the Lee Academy cause.
“Carroll gave it their best effort and our guys didn’t” said Lee Academy football coach Rick Johnston. “It was one of those games where we just couldn’t get going.”
Johnston explained in no uncertain terms to his team after the game he was not pleased and expected them to move on, get ready for North Delta and the playoffs.
“North Delta is banged up like us and they’ve got some different people in spots at this point in the season,” said Johnston. “It’s no secret they are going to line up and run at us.”
Lee stands 6-3 overall and a perfect 3-0 in district play.
“We play North Delta and then have a week off to get ready for the playoffs,” said Johnston. “At this point it looks like we will play Tri-County (Flora) in the first round. We do host the first round.”
Johnston said the Colts have to bounce back this weekend and he hopes Colts fans will make the drive down Highway 6 for the game
“We need to get some momentum as we head into the playoffs,” said Johnston. “We’ve got good players and a good team and we just need to get back in the game.”
Friday’s game with Carroll was a defensive slugfest with neither team playing well early.
The turnover-bug bit both teams early with Lee’s Bryan Ray grabbing an interception.
Carroll recovered a fumble mid-way in the first quarter and threw a 32-yard touchdown pass on the second play. The Rebel’s point-after was good and Carroll was up 7-0.
Carroll got two more interceptions in the second quarter and Lee’s Tanner Fava got one for the Colts, but the score remained 7-0 at halftime.
Carrol made a field goal late in the third to carry the game to 10-0.
The fourth quarter saw Ryan Mooney recover a fumble for Lee. That would lead to Lee’s only touchdown of the night.
Colt quarterback Will Walker found Ray, Fava and Will Moser for passes and covered 32 yards to get to the Carroll 13-yardline. Walker then rolled right and flipped the ball to Moser on the far sideline and in the end zone. Lee’s PAT was good and the Colts had closed the gap, 10-7.
But with less than a minute to play, it was too late.
North Delta is 3-6 on the year and coming off a 34-20 win over Winona Christian.
