The city talks a lot about cleaning up Clarksdale and putting their best foot forward for businesses, industry and families wanting to move to town, but they don’t do a lot about it.
The issue of junk cars once again was brought up by commissioners who say homeowner call them constantly about junk cars in the yards and city ordinances that prevent nuisances in residential neighborhoods.
“Property values are down because of this and we are going to have to either raise taxes or reduce services if we don’t do something,” said Ward 1 Commissioner Bo Plunk. “We’ve talked and talked but aren’t getting anything done.”
Mayor Chuck Espy said he went to two locations where the cars cranked and didn’t know what the city could do about that.
Espy said he felt like his time was better spent on economic development, jobs programs and negotiating city contracts than junk cars.
Ward 2 Commissioner Ken Murphy asked if some kind of program could be created to buy junk car and have them hauled off. He said Tupelo had a similar program that solved their problem.
