The Clarksdale Police Department is investigating a homicide that occurred Saturday evening in the 500 block of North State Street.
Police were called to the scene at about 5:20 p.m. July 1, 2023 in reference to a domestic dispute where a man had been shot.
“Once officers arrived, it was discovered that a 46-year-old black male was shot one time in the head by a black female during a domestic disturbance,” police said in press release issued Monday morning. “The victim was found unresponsive and later pronounced deceased by the Coahoma County Coroner at the scene.”
Police said they have 21-year-old black female in custody as a “person of interest” but did not state if any charges had been formally filed, an arrest was made or when and if the person would be arraigned.
In a departure from traditional press releases, the name of the woman in custody was not named. Police said the name of the victim was not given pending notification of his family.
This is an ongoing investigation and anyone with information about those involved in the shooting or events leading up to the shooting are urged to contact police at 621-8156, or simply dial 911. All calls remain anonymous and cash is paid to those providing information that leads to solving a crime.
The Clarksdale Police department is currently investigating three homicides where no arrest has been made.
The first was a shooting at a nightclub on Highway 161 on February 24, the second is a shooting of a 15-year-old on West Second Street on May 22 and the third was the murder of a 23-year-old who was shot in his yard on June 8.
Police have also not announced any arrests after 13 people were shot in downtown Clarksdale and a third at a Friars Point convenience store around 2:45 a.m. Sunday, May 23. The Coahoma County Sheriff’s Department later investigated the shooting of four people in Jonestown that Sunday night.
The downtown shooting was the worst ever recorded in Clarksdale with over 120 shell casing reported found at the scene. That incident was captured on private video cameras and the city’s SkyCop cameras were reported working at the time.
