The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Advisory for Coahoma County and the entire Mid-South this afternoon through tomorrow.
Winds are expected to come out of the Southeast and pick up in the afternoon to 25-30 mph. Wind gusts up to 40 mph are most likely, but there could be a few isolated gusts up to 50 mph.
Power outages are possible and heavy rain is expected in the evening hours.
"Damaging winds are the primary threat and heavy rain possible," said Coahoma County Emergency Management Director Charles Hale. "The Coahoma County Emergency Management Agency will continue to monitor the Severe Weather Probabilities and provide updates as needed."
Hale said EMA will be in touch with the National Weather Service throughout the night. Anyone who spots severe weather or suffers weather damage should call 911 immediately.
The alert listed the Coahoma County threat level for high winds at category five the highest level issued by the National Weather Service.
While rain is expected to be intense at time, the impact should be low.
Residents are urged to stay indoors and notify local utilities if the lights go out.
The Coahoma Community College has a tornado shelter that will be open to students in the event of a warning.
Clarksdale residents are asked not to drive to the shelter in the event of a warning as a car can be the most dangerous place to be in severe weather.
Residents are advised to stay away from windows and doors and seek an inner room if a warning is issued. Those living in mobile homes or upstairs apartments should stay vigilant and be ready to move to a safer location quickly.
Residents should keep their phones charged and flashlights, rain gear, shoes and blankets handy.
The fast moving front is expected to move through the area about midnight.
