The Clarksdale Police Department has arrested an employee of a local business on embezzlement charges.
Police were called to Auto Zone at 620 South State Street on a report of an employee had given away approximately $1,400 in merchandise.
In Mississippi shoplifting, embezzlement or even receiving stolen property under $1,000 is called petty larceny.
Theft above $1,000 but less than $5,000 can be deemed grand larceny. The offender faces up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine if convicted. The penalty increases to a ten-year felony sentence if the property is stolen from a place of worship.
Residential Burglary
Clarksdale Police are investigating a home burglary in the 100 Block of Madison Avenue..
Police said an Xbox and TV, valued at $600, were taken.
Anyone convicted of breaking and entering a home or inner door of a dwelling whether armed with a deadly weapon or not, and even if at the time the dwelling house is not occupied, with intent to commit a crime, shall be placed in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections for not less than three years nor more than 25 years.
The crime is enhanced if the alleged thief has a previous burglary conviction.
Grand Larceny
Police are investigating another theft of tools and equipment in Clarksdale.
Authorities were called to 1015 Sasse Street after a $20,000 piece of construction equipment was taken. No description was given of the item stolen.
Clarksdale Police have previously reported the theft of a trailer containing equipment and tools stolen over the weekend.
Police reports said a 10-foot trailer, generator and pressure washer taken from the 1300 block of Lombard Street.
Authorities said the tools and equipment stolen and trailer in that incident were valued at $2,600.
