Coahoma and Tallahatchie County firefighters battled a fire in crossties in four gondola railroad cars for almost nine hours Tuesday.
The cars were detached from the freight train and authorities were called when the fire was discovered as the train passed near Swan Lake at Sharkey Road.
The fire started in one car and spread to the others. The cause of the fire has not been determined.
The fire was reported to the Tallahatchie County Sheriff's Work Center in Sumner at 4:16 p.m. with Tallahatchie firefighters the first on the scene.
Coahoma County Volunteer Fire Department and Clarksdale Fire Department units were called out once first responders got to the scene.
Firefighters from Lyon, Lula, Dublin, Bobo and Jonestown along with personnel from other surrounding departments also responded.
The decision was made to contain the fire in the railcars and then extinguish the blaze.
Clarksdale’s ladder truck with a nozzle on the end was called to elevate and spray water into the cars. Clarksdale firefighters spent most of Wednesday morning cleaning soot off the ladder.
Firefighters remained on the scene until 3 a.m. Wednesday cooling the rail cars
No one was injured in the blaze.
