From the offseason weight-lifting to practices in the scorching Mississippi summer heat, high school football players dedicate their time and talents to become outstanding athletes.
They learn how to take care of themselves, for their own health and for the team that often becomes like another family. They study their opponents months in advance, learning the plays and blitz packages they will see in the upcoming season. They learn preparation. They learn teamwork. They learn to excel.
The few who possess both physical talent and superior work ethic, if all goes well, may be honored by all-star teams. Those are the players who decide games, become heroes to children, and might even play more football at the next level.
Coahoma, Quitman and Tunica Counties are blessed with elite athletes and outstanding leaders who have already begun achieving and influencing others.
Meet the Clarksdale Press Register All-North Delta Team.
The rich tradition of football excellence, with individual players and local teams, has been continued in 2021. The team was chosen collaboratively by The Clarksdale Press Register and local high school football coaches. The Press Register thanks the coaches for giving their time and wise counsel to play a pivotal role in the selection of the All-North Delta team.
If there was one common theme described by the coaches, it was that most of the players had the athletic ability to play more than one position for their teams. The coaches also thought highly enough of each player to specifically mention their work ethic.
The Clarksdale Press Register Coach of the Year for 2021 is Henry Johnson of Clarksdale High School. Even after losing their starting senior quarterback to a lower-leg injury, the Wildcats blew through their schedule, cruising to an 8-1 regular season and Region 3 championship in Class 4A.
The Clarksdale season only ended when their 4th-and-goal play with less than a minute to go was stopped by the 12 defenders playing for opponent Louisville. The officiating crew was suspended by the Mississippi High School Athletic Association, but the damage was done.
A number of the players on the Clarksdale Press Register All-North Delta Team will have the opportunity to play at the next level. The Press Register will devote extensive coverage to the recruitment and signing of local players, and to the recruiting class of Coahoma Community College.
