A simple phone call has resulted in the arrest of a man wanted for murder in Clarksdale.
“Acting on a citizen’s tip, Clarksdale Police arrested Marcus Myles at a local restaurant in Clarksdale,” police said in a press release Friday evening. “Myles was taken into custody on warrants for Homicide and two counts of Aggravated Assault stemming from a shooting that occurred on Feb. 24, 2023."
Myles had been indicted for a 2017 murder in Coahoma County and was awaiting trial in that incident when the February shooting occurred. When Myles was allowed out of jail, the requirements of his release and what judge approved his bail have not been released.
Police did not give details about where Myles might have been hiding over the past five months. No bond was announced after his arrest Friday.
Myles, 24, is allegedly the person who shot at least three people at CELEB Club on Highway 161 South of Clarksdale in February. That incident saw a total of four people hit by gunfire and one died from his wounds.
Police and ambulance crews were called to the scene after a fight broke out in the club that Friday night. Police reported one of the subjects left and returned to the club, multiple shots were fired, and most people fled the scene.
When police arrived they found several people injured.
“Upon police arrival, it was observed that there was one male subject shot in the stomach area inside the club,” Clarksdale Police said in a statement. “Police also responded to the hospital where three other gunshot victims had arrived via personal vehicles.”
Police said they found evidence of shooting both inside and outside the club.
“One male subject was shot several times in the stomach and right hip area,” police said. “The other male was shot in the left shoulder who could also be the possible shooter. The female subject was shot in the left shoulder as well. Police learned that the shooting occurred after an altercation between two male subjects.”
Police also said only one of the victims appeared to be the intended target.
The shooting saw two men and a woman go to the hospital in a private vehicle with two of the victims then sent on to a hospital in Memphis where one of them later died on Thursday, March 2.
Police have not released the names of the shooting victims or the person who died.
Myles also was shot in the shoulder during the incident. He was treated and released from a Clarksdale hospital before he was developed as a suspect.
Anyone who contacted Myles by phone, sheltered or transported him or helped him in anyway evade authorities can be charged with aiding and abetting.
In Mississippi, the penalty for aiding and abetting a crime can be as severe as if you had committed the crime yourself. Mississippi law says if you are an accessory after the fact to a violent crime, you could receive, upon conviction, up to 20 years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections.
Clarksdale has seen a violent summer with at least five people killed and more than 25 shot. Police are still looking to make arrests in four of the homicides.
The Clarksdale Board of Mayor and Commissioners were updated two weeks ago by Police Chief Robbie Linley on recent shootings that started with 14 hit by gunfire in downtown Clarksdale early Sunday morning May 21 and the most recent shooting of four juveniles on Andrews Street Saturday, July 15.
The Clarksdale Police Department continues to seek details and find the shooters in a downtown shooting that injured 14 people. No arrests have been made in that incident.
Anyone with details about these shootings, or any felony in Clarksdale, is asked to contact the Clarksdale Police Department at 621-8156, or simply dial 911.
Aggravated assault is defined as injury or threat to a person to make them fear for their life or assault with a weapon. It is punishable by up to 20-years in prison and a $10,000 fine. An adult who assaults a juvenile can find the penalty enhanced to 30-years in prison.
