The Clarksdale Police Department in investigating a shooting that saw a man hit in the head with while traveling in a vehicle on Ritchie Street Thursday evening. He was taken to the hospital by another occupant in the car.
The shooting was deemed an aggravated assault by police and could be upgraded to murder or attempted murder. No arrest or update in the case had been announced by police as of Saturday morning
“On June 8 at about 8:36 p.m. the Clarksdale Police Department responded to 600 Block of Garfield Street for shots fired in the area,” police said in a press release. “Units then responded to the ER for a male subject that had been shot. Once officers arrived at the ER, they observed that a male subject had been shot in the head but was still living.
The report said their investigation determined the victim was inside a vehicle traveling in the 600 block of Ritchie when the shooting occurred. The other occupant in the vehicle was not hit by the gunfire.
Police did not give a motive for the shooting which is being actively investigated. Police also did not release names of those involved in the shooting. It was the second shooting that day with links to Garfield Street.
Police reports said officers responded to phone call of a person shot on Garfield at 2:14 a.m. that Thursday.
“Once police arrived, they found that Jerimiah Snow, a 23-year-old black, male had been shot and killed sitting outside a residence in the 700 Block of Garfield,” the report said. “There is not a suspect or a motive for the shooting currently.”
Police did say this is an active investigation and they are following up on leads.
“If there is anyone who may have information about this homicide, the Clarksdale Police Department asks that they contact the Clarksdale Police Department’s Investigative Division at 662-621-8152,” the press release said. “To protect the integrity of the case, this is all the information that the Clarksdale Police Department can release at this time. More information may be released as it becomes available.”
Mayor Chuck Espy said at a city board meeting at noon Thursday he has data that shows Clarksdale’s problems are not unique.
“I want to talk about the recent uptick in crime,” said Espy. “Some people want to stick their head in the sand and only dream it is all about Clarksdale.”
Espy went on to say there are similar and more violent crimes in towns in the Delta, Mississippi and the nation.
Thursday’s homicide follows the shooting death of a 15-year-old in a house in the 1200 block of West Second Street on May 22.
That case was turned over the Mississippi Department of Investigation at the request of the Clarksdale Police Department as it involves a former city police officer.
There have been no reports of charges or arrests in that shooting.
That murder followed the shooting of 12 people in downtown Clarksdale at 2:45 Sunday morning May 21 on Delta Avenue. A 13th shooting was reported at a convenience store on Friar’s Point Road and a 14th shooting was reported in front of the Clarksdale Press Register on East Second Street that morning.
More than 100 spent shells were picked up at the scene in downtown Clarksdale following that incident that was caught on SkyCop cameras.
There have been no reports of charges or arrests in those shootings.
The Coahoma County Sheriff’s Department also investigated the shooting of four people that weekend in Jonestown.
Four men were shot while sitting in a car on a parking lot in Jonestown. Authorities have not reported any charges or arrests in that incident either.
