A Clarksdale man was arrested Monday, Jan. 7 and charged with the possession of two rifles that were reported stolen from cars parked outside two Clarksdale homes in December.
Kenyalla Matthews, 19, was arrested around 2:15 p.m. in the 1000 block of State Street in Clarksdale and charged with possession of stolen firearms.
During his appearance in Clarksdale Municipal Court on Thursday, Jan. 10, police said the weapons were recovered during a traffic stop in the parking lot of the Clarksdale Walmart on South State Street. Police said the arrest was part of an undercover sting operation.
Matthews, who has no prior felony arrests, will remain in the Coahoma County Jail until he makes another appearance in municipal court after Judge Derek Hopson suspended setting his bond. His next court appearance would be Thursday, Jan. 17.
The firearms were reported stolen from two separate auto burglaries.
On Dec. 28, a Browning .308 rifle was stolen from a vehicle parked at a home in the 100 block of Westover Drive.
On Dec. 29, a Marlin 22-caliber rifle was stolen from a vehicle parked at a residence in the 500 block of Wright Road.
Investigators are still investigating the case and more charges are expected, said Clarksdale Police Chief Sandra Williams.
