They may be the best voices in the State of Mississippi and it will certainly be the best music in Clarksdale Sunday afternoon.
Coahoma Community College’s Lyceum Committee will host the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Choral Music Festival starting at 5 p.m. at The Pinnacle on the campus of Coahoma Community College.
“We are very pleased to have five university concert choirs come and join us,” said Kelvin Towers, CCC Music Department Chair and Director of Choirs. “This community knows the quality of our choir - and they will sing, too - but these choirs also have highly talented and highly trained voices. This should be something everyone want to hear.”
And the event is free and open to the public.
Choirs from Alcorn State, Jackson State, Mississippi Valley State, Tougaloo and the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff will be there.
“They will sing something for everybody,” said Towers. “Each choir will sing for about 15 minute s and each will sing three numbers. The music will range from classical to Negro spirituals to Gospel and more.”
This marks the sixth year for Coahoma to host this event.
Towers said the college takes a lot of pride in this event and people educated at these colleges take a lot of pride in their choir and will attend this event.
“This will be a very high quality of music,” said Towers. “We just invite people to come out and enjoy the gifts and talents of these students.”
