Preliminary work for a $2.5 million bus maintenance facility for the county school system continues to move ahead.
The project is scheduled to go out for bids this spring and be completed within 10 to 12 months after construction begins, said William T. Mills, the principal architect at Mills & Mills Architects in Tupelo.
Mills made a presentation to members of the Coahoma County School District Board of Trustees during its Tuesday, Dec. 11 meeting.
A portion of the project involves the expansion of the current administration building.
“We are so crowded now we are walking on top of boxes,” said Interim School Superintendent Dr. Ilean Richards. “We need more room and that’s why we need to enlarge this building.”
The bus facility will be built adjacent to Coahoma County High School on Lee Drive and will have room for five school busses to be worked on at one time.
In other business, the school board:
* Received a financial report from Mildred Moore, the school system’s finance director, stating the district was solid financially, after which members voted to pay claims to totaling $12,911.21. Asked why the claims were substantially lower than usual, Moore said, “It is what it is.”
* Heard from Anthony Dixon, the school system’s fixed assets manager, who reported on fixed assets disposal.
* Heard from Richards, who pushed the next board of trustees meeting back to the third Tuesday of January “because we need time to organize.” The date of the next meeting will be Tuesday, Jan. 15, at 6 p.m.
* Went into executive session to discuss student matters, as well as personnel matters, and also heard the interim superintendent’s report.
