One local group will help celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. when they hold their 23rd annual Awards Breakfast on Monday, Jan. 21.
The breakfast will be sponsored by the local Epsilon Xi Lambda chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. The event will be held starting at 9 a.m. at The Pinnacle on the campus of Coahoma Community College.
A highlight of the awards breakfast will be the reading of essays on the subject “One Person Can Make a Difference.” The essay contest will feature students from Coahoma, Bolivar, Sunflower, Tallahatchie, Washington and Issaquena counties.
The winner will receive a $700 scholarship, while second place will receive $350 and the third-place contestant will take home $200. Each participant will receive a $100 honorarium.
There will also be the naming of Outstanding Citizens for Coahoma County and the Delta.
Members of the Coahoma Community College choir will perform, as will the Jazzy Divas, which is a group of youth from Clarksdale and Coahoma County.
Tickets to the event are $20 for adults and $5 for students.
