Bob Berry is the fifth native of Clarksdale to reign over Carnival Memphis, formerly known as the Cotton Carnival, in the 88-year history of the event.
Berry, who now lives in Memphis, is the leading shipper of FedEx Corp. as he ships his various products all over the world. He has a business in the Bluff City called Worlds Away with sales offices throughout the United States.
Carnival Memphis is scheduled for May 31 thru June 7 this year.
This year’s queen is Catherine Owen of Memphis.
Three Stovall brothers and Oscar Carr have previously served as Kings of the Cotton Carnival representing Clarksdale.
Growing up in Clarksdale, Berry worked on the family cotton farm throughout high school. At Ole Miss, he was a member of ATO fraternity. Following college, he worked in the sailing program for Outward Bound in Maine.
After making an inspirational trip to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico in 1992, King Bob founded Worlds Away. Starting out as an import company that revitalized the “painted tole” look that was so popular in the 1980s, Worlds Away soon began to push the design boundaries with additions such as hand-crafted lighting and hand-painted metal furniture.
Today, the company continues to create unique and sophisticated styles for all design applications for the home, hotel or venue.
In 25 years, Worlds Away has grown to become a leading designer, manufacturer and wholesaler of mirrors, case goods, occasional furniture, lighting and accessories.
From their factories to their showrooms around the world, the goal remains the same: Design and create a diverse collection of furniture and décor that fit seamlessly into any style and will look as current 10 years from now as it does today.
King Bob has been involved in Carnival for decades. He is a member of the Memphis Chamber of Commerce Chairman’s Circle, the Chickasaw Country Club, the Coosaw Creek Country Club and the Miacomet Golf Club.
When he isn’t running his business, he enjoys hunting, fishing, golf and tennis.
Berry is the brother of Pete Berry, owner of Bear’s Gym in Clarksdale.
