Members of Iota Delta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. will observe its annual Founders Day at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23 at the New Covenant Missionary Baptist Church, 803 Martin Luther King Blvd. in Clarksdale.
This year’s Founders Day theme is “Exemplifying Excellence in the Arts.” The local chapter will be exposing students to arts enrichment and culture by showcasing talent and exploring African-American writers, entertainers and various other art forms.
Groups from Coahoma and Sunflower counties will be performing. Appearing on the program will be students from the Clarksdale High School visual arts department under the direction of Charles Reid Jr.; the Jazzy Divas dance troupe led by instructor Javette White; the Gentry High School choir led by Kenny Jackson; and the Coahoma Community College choir directed by Kevin Towers.
The public is invited to attend.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was founded on Jan. 15, 1908, by a group of nine students on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C., making it the oldest Greek-letter organization established in America by women of color.
This year, the sorority is celebrating its 111th year anniversary. The theme “service to all mankind” is the foundation of all community activities performed by the membership. Among their commitments are support for women’s health and wellness, building an economic legacy, supporting the arts, global impact and support for Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
Locally, the Iota Delta Omega Chapter has mentored students in the Community Humanity Involvement Club, financially assisted Coahoma Community College, awarded annual scholarships to high school students, and supported the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association and Breast Cancer awareness efforts. The chapter also assists the local CARE Station in feeding the needy and supports seniors and the homeless on the MLK Day of Service.
