Ms. Lillian Odie Humphries, 101, a Friars Point native, spent her adult life as an elementary school teacher and reading teacher. She was born Dec. 23, 1918 and died Dec. 30, 2019. Her dedication to the craft was shown in how much she cared for her students, how she inspired them to dream, and lives were changed as a result. She was a graduate of Rust College of Holly Springs, did additional study at, then, Memphis State University, and Delta State University. Ms. Humphries retired in 1980 with 45 plus years in the classroom. She was a lifelong member and Sunday School teacher at Armstead Chapel Church of Friars Point. She had a loving family to perpetuate her memory: Barbara and Andrew Thompson, niece and nephew who were her caretakers; brother and sister-in-law, Harry and Rubye Humphries; sister and brother-in-law, Ellen and Jodie Walton; nephew, Ernest Leon Hoosman; nieces Kimberlynne Humphries Morris, and Katina Humphries Crawford; great nephews and nieces, Andrew Thompson III (LaKeehsa), Steven Craig Thompson (LaTonya); Meagan Thompson, Tia Crawford, Joan Crawford, KaMaria Morris, Yusuf Morris; and great, great niece, Elle Brennen Thompson.
Memorial service was 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, 2020 at Beautiful Zion M.B. Church at Friars Point with the Rev. Myles officiating. Visitation was 1 to 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 3. Burial was at McLaurin Cemetery.
