Nina Chicouras Zachary, 88, of West Helena, Ark., passed away on Jan. 27, 2020, due to natural causes after a brief illness.
Nina was born in Clarksdale on June 29, 1931. She graduated from Clarksdale High School in 1949 where she participated in the High School Orchestra as First Chair Violin. She continued on to receive a Master’s Degree from Delta State University. Her outstanding scholarship earned her membership in both Kappa Delta Pi and Pi Gamma Mu Honor Societies.
Nina was married to Nick Zachary, of Skopelos, Greece on June 28, 1953; they were married 57 years.
Nina was a High School Teacher for Barton High School teaching Social Studies for 18 years. She enjoyed reading, music, singing in the choir, Greek dancing, Greek history, and watching tennis or football regularly. Nina was a meticulous hostess who loved to entertain, often hosting holiday events for friends and family.
Nina is survived by her son, Constantine “ Dean” Zachary, his wife, Kate Garofas Zachary of Jonesboro, Ark. and Nina’s sister, Fulla Caridakis of Ashland, Ala.
Nina is preceded in death by her parents, Gus and Olga Chicouras of Clarksdale, her Daughter, Maria Zachary, and husband, Nick Zachary.
The Pall Bearers include Mahlon Bouldin, Dr. Marshall “Bo” Bouldin, Tim Green, Jim Hall, Gragg Higginbotham, and Bill Huettel. Honorary Pall Bearer: Dr. Pat Bell.
The funeral service will be held at noon on Thursday, Jan. 30 at St George’s Episcopal Church in Clarksdale MS. Father Simon Thomas of Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church will be conducting the service. The burial will follow at Oakridge Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of our gracious and loving Manuel and Mary Beth Peters for a reception immediately following. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Meredith-Nowell Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
